The Village

The village of KOZIROG is one of the most beautiful ones in the Central part of the Balkan range. It is located at what once was main trading artery towards Carigrad (today’s Istanbul) and in 18th Century became an important pass between North and South Bulgaria.

The name of the place means GOAT HORN, which in Bulgarian is synonymous to "disobedient". Picturesque goat-track roads are leading there. The villagers specialised in making goats cheese, goat horn handled knives and goat rugs.

The main industry of the people those days was stock breeding, trading and traditional crafts. Today, the surroundings of Kozirog are popular for gathering herbs, mushrooms and bee-keeping. The fresh mountain air and breath taking views are excellent premise for a relaxing stay!

The English traveller McMichael in the 18th Century wrote in his diary that "the Balkan villages are ideal for staying over night; they are calm and full of beauty, charm and romance. The people here are hard-working and patient." Today, three centuries on this observation is still much valid.

The House

The house is 120 years old and belonged to a family of craftsmen. Its latest owner Uncle Gencho was a shoe maker. One of the lasts he used is in the tavern on the ground floor. You can see his picture there as well. Whilst every effort is made to restore original features – which the visitor will see throughout the house all modern amenities are present as well.

The centrepiece of the house undoubtedly is the tavern, featuring open fire, original wooden beams and stone walls.

The house offers four spacious double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets. There is a fully fitted kitchen for those who enjoy cooking. If you want to just relax next to the open fire there is a take away option available as well. Restaurant "The Hunters" place" would be happy to deliver the food of your choice, including game, fish and traditional Bulgarian dishes.
